Why Gisele’s World Exists
Gisele’s World was born from lived experience.
My daughter, Gisele, is 11 years old. Over the last 11 years, our journey through autism has been filled with love, but also with moments that made it clear just how many gaps exist for families like ours.
We’ve gone to recreational spaces, like trampoline parks and other kid friendly activities, where there weren’t enough safety measures in place for a child who elopes.
We’ve been in places where Gisele’s vocal and physical stimming was viewed as disruptive rather than understood as communication and regulation.
Many environments didn’t offer a quiet or safe space to step away when she became overstimulated, leaving us to manage difficult moments in public, often without support.
We’ve encountered staff and systems that weren’t equipped to understand that Gisele doesn’t communicate or respond the way neurotypical children do.
While compassion does exist, it’s often hit or miss, frequently dependent on whether I take on the responsibility of explaining that my child has autism in the moment.
That explanation, repeated over and over, adds to the mental and emotional load that so many parents and caregivers already carry.
As Gisele has gotten older, another challenge has emerged.
Many of the activities she loves now have age limits. She’s considered “too old” to participate, even though those activities are where she feels comfortable and happy.
At the same time, her size means that participating alongside much younger children can raise safety concerns, not because she intends harm, but because the space simply wasn’t designed with children like her in mind.
These moments are isolating.
Not just for Gisele, but for our entire family.
What we’ve learned is that while services and therapies are important, families also need spaces where they don’t have to explain, apologize, or constantly assess whether their child will be accepted or accommodated.
That realization became the heart of Gisele’s World.
We are building a place where individuals across the autism spectrum, along with the families and caregivers who support them, can exist together safely, confidently, and without judgment.
A place designed with real needs in mind, not as an afterthought.
Because families like ours don’t just need services.
We need community, understanding, and belonging.
